Chiropractic Help For Lumbar Disc Herniation

According to the Chiropractic & Osteopathy Journal, a case study involving an elderly male patient indicated the successful use of chiropractic therapy for dealing with lumbar disc herniation.

The patient had been suffering from a right-sided foot drop. After visiting a private spine clinic, he was prescribed an ankle-foot orthosis. During this time, there was no sensory, motor and reflex action in the right leg and foot. A neurologist confirmed the same after performing an electromyography and nerve conduction velocity testing.

When referred to a chiropractor, the patient was treated with the help of spinal manipulation. His sessions were scheduled twice a week along with wobble chair exercises three times daily for a total of 90 days. After several sessions of this chiropractic therapy, the patient was recommended for follow-up electro-diagnostic studies. In these studies, significant improvements were noticed in the patient’s own observations as well as daily functions.

On the whole, Lumbar disc herniation is a common problem found in manual medicine. However, chiropractic therapy needs to be conducted with proper care as it may affect the structure and function of the lumbar disc itself. Suffering from neurological deficit in the lower extremity, the patient was treated by using spinal manipulation and exercises. His progress and improvements were assessed through electro-diagnostic testing.

Instead of surgical alternatives, chiropractic care proved to be much more effective and non-invasive in the case of the elderly patient.
