The Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research also known as the JVSR featured a research study establishing a link between the physiological characteristics of the body and repair of DNA. This study was published in the February 18, 2005 issue. The March 2005 issue of the Medical News Today prepared an important report on the results of this study from data gathered from the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research. The study mentioned above was a result of the joint efforts by chiropractors and research scientists belonging to the University of Lund based in Sweden. It presented facts that stated that chiropractic therapy could have a positive effect on the physical processes that have a bearing on DNA repair and the presence of oxidative stress in the body of an individual.
The report stated that serum thiols are the main antioxidant ingredients. These antioxidant elements can be used to assess the state of health of an individual and the level of DNA repair activity occurring due to action of enzymes in the body. These aspects have shown a relation with total life span and the ageing process in past studies by eminent experts. In the present study, a record was made of the serum thiol levels in twenty one individuals who were suffering from chronic pain problems and were also undergoing chiropractic treatments from trained doctors. The levels of the same element in patients who were not suffering from any symptoms and had already undergone chiropractic therapy were also noted. Both the results were then evaluated on the basis of comparisons made with a third group comprising of thirty people who had never received chiropractic therapy sessions.
The results showcased that the individuals who were still showing painful symptoms had the least amount of antioxidants while those who had received chiropractic therapy in the past and were without symptoms shower relatively much higher levels of the serum. On the other hand, those who did not receive any chiropractic sessions reported the lowest amount of antioxidants. The data gathered from this study lead to the conclusion that various factors like physical, chemical and emotional stress could have adverse effects on the working of the nervous system and even lead to changes in the way DNA repair is done inside the cells. High antioxidant levels that can be brought about with chiropractic therapy can significantly help in removing oxidative stress.
